The short version

Your saved documents and tickets are stored on your device. Online imports and ticket checks send the required lookup details to the relevant government service. Android's scanning tools also send technical metrics to Google. We do not sell your personal information or use your documents for advertising.

01

About this policy

RoadLegal, also listed as Road Legal, is developed by Kevin Stewart. In this policy, “we” and “us” refer to Kevin Stewart as the developer of RoadLegal. This policy covers the iOS and Android app, the RoadLegal website, and information you send us for support.

RoadLegal does not require a RoadLegal account and does not operate a cloud service for your saved app records. Features and permissions can vary between iOS, Android, and app versions.

02

Information in the app

RoadLegal uses the information you enter, scan, select from your device, or retrieve through an online lookup to organize your records and show relevant deadlines. This can include:

  • Vehicle information: vehicle names, registration plates, chassis or VIN numbers, and MVIDs.
  • Documents and attachments: registration, fitness and insurance certificates, driver's licences, photos, PDFs, videos, and the text extracted from them. These files may contain names, addresses, dates of birth, policy numbers, or other personal details.
  • Driver lookup details: licence number, date of birth, original licence issue date, and control number, together with your automatic-check preferences and the last check's time or error status.
  • Ticket information: ticket numbers, offences, fines, issue and payment dates, payment status, and court dates or locations.
  • Preferences: reminder intervals, notification choices, widget configuration, and document-cleanup settings.

Only add records you are entitled to use, including when you manage a vehicle or driver's information for someone else.

03

Scanning and autofill

RoadLegal reads text from the images, PDFs, or videos you select and uses it to suggest document and ticket details. It also reuses saved vehicle and driver details to reduce typing. You can review and correct the suggested information before saving.

Text recognition happens on your device using Apple's Vision framework on iOS and Google's ML Kit on Android. RoadLegal does not upload your scanned files or extracted text to a RoadLegal server for recognition. Google's ML Kit processes these inputs locally; its separate technical-metrics collection is explained under third-party services.

04

Document imports and ticket checks

Importing documents from CGDS

When you request an import, RoadLegal opens Jamaica's CGDS Certificate Portal at cgds.gov.jm in an embedded browser. It submits your certificate number and the chassis number for a fitness certificate, or your certificate number and MVID for a motor vehicle registration certificate. Known details may be filled from your saved vehicle.

The government service receives these fields and returns the requested certificate. RoadLegal brings the returned PDF into the document-import flow, where it can be processed and saved on your device. The embedded website may use cookies, browser storage, or cached content to operate its retrieval session.

Retrieving traffic tickets

When you set up or run ticket checks, RoadLegal sends your licence number, control number, original licence issue date, and date of birth directly to Jamaica's Traffic Ticket Lookup service at trafficticketlookup.gov.jm. These details validate the lookup and retrieve ticket records, which RoadLegal uses to add or update tickets on your device.

Enabling automatic checks allows these same details to be sent in the background, even when the app is not open. The operating system decides when background checks can run. You can also use Check now, switch off Automatic checks, or select Remove checks for a driver. Switching checks off retains the saved lookup profile; removing checks deletes that profile. Previously saved tickets remain until you delete them separately.

These requests use HTTPS. The government services also receive normal connection information, such as your IP address. They control their own records, logs, retention, and privacy practices. RoadLegal is an independent app and is not operated by these government services.

05

Reminders and widgets

RoadLegal uses saved expiry and due dates, together with your chosen reminder intervals, to schedule local notifications through your device's operating system. These reminders do not require a RoadLegal notification server.

Widgets read relevant app data on the same device to display vehicle documents, upcoming expiries, or scanner shortcuts. On iOS, the app and its widget extension use a shared app storage area.

Notifications and widgets can reveal document names, vehicle plates, ticket numbers, amounts, or deadlines to someone who can see your screen. You can remove widgets and control notification permission and preview visibility in your device settings.

06

Storage and security

Saved records and attachments are held in the app's local storage. RoadLegal does not keep a developer-hosted copy of your document library or offer its own cloud synchronization service.

Saved ticket-lookup profiles receive additional protection: iOS stores them in the device's Keychain, and Android stores them in an encrypted file protected by a key in Android Keystore. Android lookup-profile files are excluded from ordinary app backup. These safeguards apply to lookup profiles; they do not mean every app record or attachment is separately encrypted by RoadLegal.

Your operating system may include other app data in device backups or transfers, depending on your platform and settings. Those copies are handled by your platform provider under its own terms. Protect your device with a passcode and review its backup settings.

The app writes local diagnostic logs to help identify errors. Logs may contain record identifiers, extracted field values, file details, or error messages. RoadLegal does not send these logs to a developer-operated analytics or crash-reporting service.

07

Third-party services and sharing

We do not sell your personal information or use it for targeted advertising. RoadLegal has no separate developer-operated analytics, crash-reporting, or hosted-records service. The following services still handle information when their features are used:

  • Government lookup services receive the information described under document imports and ticket checks.
  • Google ML Kit and Google Play services power Android text recognition and document scanning. Google receives technical data such as device model and operating-system information, app package and version, installation or device identifiers, performance measurements, feature usage, configuration, input/output sizes, and error codes. Google uses it to maintain, troubleshoot, and improve these tools and prevent misuse. Scanned images, video, text, and recognition results are processed on the device rather than sent to Google for recognition. Scanner components may also be downloaded through Google Play services. See ML Kit's privacy information, its Android data disclosures, and the Google Privacy Policy.
  • Apple, Google, and your chosen providers handle app distribution, operating-system services, device backup, email, or files you choose to share under their own policies.

Using a document's share action sends the file to the app or recipient you select. Copies you export, share, or save elsewhere are outside RoadLegal's local storage and are not removed when you delete the original record.

Information you send us for support is handled by our email service and may be disclosed where required by law. We cannot disclose app records that we do not hold.

08

Retention and deletion

You can delete saved documents and tickets in the app. Deleting an app record does not delete the corresponding official government record, a file in your photo library, a shared or exported copy, or an existing device backup.

Automatic document cleanup is enabled by default. With Remove expired documents enabled, the app removes documents whose expiry date is more than 15 days in the past when its cleanup runs. You can disable this in Settings to retain expired documents until you delete them manually. Cleanup runs when the app starts, so deletion may occur after the 15-day point.

Paid tickets are retained until you delete them manually. Saved ticket-check profiles remain until you select Remove checks for that driver. Removing a profile stops future checks for that driver and keeps already-saved tickets. Deleting a ticket alone does not remove its lookup profile or prevent a later lookup from retrieving government records again.

To remove your local information, remove ticket-check profiles and delete saved records before uninstalling. On iOS, Keychain entries can survive an uninstall; uninstalling alone should not be relied on to remove lookup profiles. Also review device backups, widgets, notification history, embedded-browser data, and any copies you exported or shared. Operating-system and browser-managed data can follow their own retention rules.

We retain support messages for as long as needed to resolve your request, handle related follow-up, and meet applicable legal obligations. You can contact us to request deletion of information you have sent us. Government and platform providers manage retention of the information they hold.

09

Device permissions

  • Camera: to capture documents or tickets when you use camera features. Android's Google document scanner can use Google Play services' camera access.
  • Selected photos and files: to import the items you choose through your device's pickers.
  • Notifications and, on Android, scheduled alarms: to deliver your local reminders. Android may reschedule reminders after a device restart.
  • Internet and background execution: for official lookups, enabled automatic ticket checks, and platform components such as the Android scanner.

RoadLegal does not request location, contacts, or microphone access. You can change available permissions in device settings. Disabling a permission can limit the associated feature and does not by itself delete previously saved information.

10

Your choices and rights

You can review and correct saved details, delete individual records, turn off or remove automatic ticket checks, choose reminder intervals, disable document cleanup, and manage widgets, notifications, and backups.

Depending on the law that applies to you, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, or a copy of personal information we hold, object to or restrict certain processing, or withdraw consent where processing relies on it. You may also raise a concern with your relevant data-protection authority, including Jamaica's Office of the Information Commissioner where Jamaican law applies.

Contact us using the details below to exercise these rights. We may need limited information to verify a request. We cannot remotely access or erase records held only on your device, or change records held by government services; we can help you use the app's controls and respond about information you have sent us.

11

Website and support

The RoadLegal website has no advertising trackers or site analytics scripts. Visiting it still sends normal web-request information, such as your IP address, browser information, and the requested page, to the server delivering it. The website loads fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser also makes requests to Google. Google's handling of those requests is covered by its Privacy Policy.

Support links open your email app. If you contact us, we receive your email address, message, and any files or technical details you choose to send, and use them to answer your request. Send only what is needed and redact unrelated personal details from screenshots or attachments.

Following links to an app store or another website makes that provider's privacy practices applicable to your visit. These providers may process information in countries other than your own under their policies and applicable law.
